It provides communities like ours with structured guidance, nationally-recognized best practices, and access to grant funding — helping us protect our homes and neighbors before a fire starts.

Grant Information

As a recognized Firewise USA® community, Strawberry Mountain / Los Altos is eligible to pursue several grant programs. Below are the primary funding sources available to our community for wildfire mitigation work.

Grant opportunities are available at the local, state, and federal levels. As an active Firewise community, we are positioned to pursue all three.

Local – Klickitat County & Fire District Grants

Targeted local grant funds — including the ladder fuel removal grant currently supporting the Strawberry Mountain brushfire mitigation project — are available periodically through Klickitat County, local fire districts, and community foundations. These are often the fastest path to funding for smaller, shovel-ready projects. Contact our community coordinator or Klickitat County Fire District for current opportunities.

State – Washington DNR Community Wildfire Preparedness Grants

WA DNR offers competitive grants to recognized Firewise communities for projects that reduce wildfire risk, including ladder fuel removal, defensible space work, and community education. Eligibility requires active Firewise recognition and documented annual participation hours.

Federal – USDA Forest Service Community Wildfire Defense Grants

Federally funded grants available to at-risk communities in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). Our location qualifies Strawberry Mountain / Los Altos to apply. Awards can support planning, mitigation projects, and community capacity building. Visit USDA Forest Service →

Federal – FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP)

Post-disaster mitigation funding available through FEMA, often unlocked after a federal disaster declaration in Washington State. Projects must reduce long-term risk. Communities typically apply through Klickitat County Emergency Management. Visit FEMA HMGP →
